According to sources, Liverpool are currently interested in signing Viktor Gyokeres this Transfer Window. The striker from Sweden currently plays for Sporting. He is expected to leave Sporting this summer and move to a top club in Europe. As a result, a lot of clubs are expected to plan a deal for him. However, the deal is tough to make because there are some issues going on between the Sporting and their player.
Liverpool Target a Striker – Viktor Gyokeres Shortlisted
Liverpool were interested in Isak from Newcastle. However, Isak is expected to stay at Newcastle. Therefore, Liverpool now shift their focus to other top strikers in Europe. Viktor Gyokeres is a name emerged among the players they have been shortlisting. This comes after the Reds plan to let their Striker Darwin Nunez leave in this transfer window.
Although Sporting asks for €80-€100 million, Liverpool expect an offer around €65 million to be enough to sign him.
Why Liverpool like Viktor Gyokeres?
Gyokeres is a complete striker, a player profile that will suit Liverpool under Arne Slot. In 2024-25 he claimed back-to-back Portuguese league golden boots by scoring 47 goals. In addition to this, He is good in linking up, pressing, and creating chances.
Under Slot, Liverpool want a striker that can press and run in channels. Gyokeres is seen as a perfect fit for that role. However, Reds Fans are not sure if he can suit the Premier League considering Nunez’s performance coming from Portuguese league.
Hurdles: Sporting Stance, Competition
A Deal for Viktor will not be easy as a lot of clubs are in race to sign him. He is linked to top clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United etc. According to sources, He has given priority to join Arsenal this summer as he likes Arteta’s project. However, if Liverpool make an attractive offer, his priority can change.
Also, last year there has been a Gentleman’s Agreement between Sporting and Viktor to let him leave this summer for €65 million. However, Viktor feels that Sporting has violated their Agreement and now they want €90 million for him. The player feels betrayed and has decided to never play for Sporting again. This makes the deal complicated with sporting. Although a understanding is expected to be made in the next few days, and this might help the deal become easier.
The Reds have not yet made a formal offer for Gyokeres. They feel that this deal will proceed only if Nunez leaves Liverpool this summer. This will help them get funds and create space for new signings.
Gyokeres’s Viewpoint
Gyokeres has clearly told Sporting about his decision to never play for them as he feels the club has violated their verbal agreement. Now Gyokeres would be eyeing a move to a top club in Europe and look for a new challenge. Although he has not publicly comfirmed his move to Liverpool, he will be open to joining the Reds.
Sporting Legend Manuel Fernandes has talked about Gyokeres’s move to Liverpool, “If you have to leave, let it be to a big club, like Liverpool or Bayern Munich… Liverpool have players there who are not half as good as Gyokeres.”
Author’s Opinion
It is now confirmed that Viktor Gyokeres will be leaving Sporting in this transfer window. The top striker is currently attracting a lot of interest from Top European clubs as well as Saudi clubs. However, Gyokeres has rejected the possibility of a move to Saudi Arabia. He prefers to stay in Europe and challenge for top titles. In this case, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are seen as favourites to sign him this summer.
However, Manchester United move may be seen as falling as the player wants Champions League and currently United are not in that tournament. Mikel Arteta and Arsenal like the player and will make a move for him soon. Also, Liverpool are waiting to clarify Darwin Nunez situation and are expected to make an offer soon after Nunez Leaves.
It will be interesting to see how his situation with Sporting is sorted. The deal will become clear in the next few weeks. Where do you expect to see Gyokeres next season? Will the Reds win the Gyokeres race? Can Arteta project influence Gyokeres to join Arsenal?
