Liverpool were close on signing the 25-year-old Spaniard

Liverpool was not very active during the last summer transfer window. They came really close to signing Martin Zubimendi but the deal didn’t materialize. Zubimendi decided to stay at San Sebastian at least till the end of the season.

The Reds only made two deals in the last summer transfer window. Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvilli are the only two players who made their way to the Anfield stadium. The club had more targets on the list but the deals collapsed.

Liverpool are still in a need of a no.6 in the team. Martin Zubimendi who has been one of the best midfielders in the Premier League has attracted the eyes of against like Manchester City and Liverpool. The Reds came really close to signing the Spaniard.

The presence of a deep-lying midfielder is quite efficient for a team. This role plays on both the attacking and the defensive setup of a team. Zubimendi has been the backbone of the Real Sociedad’s midfield and played this dual role.

There are problems for the Premier League table leaders as they have some problems ahead of January. Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contracts are expiring soon. The club has to prepare new deals for these pillars of defence or keep a close eye on potential replacements.

Van Dijk is 33 years old and Trent has been heavily linked with Spanish giants Real Madrid. The La Liga title holder is expected to make a huge bid for the English defender in January. Liverpool will have to prepare a new contract if they plan for the duo.

Zubimendi expands on why he rejected Liverpool

The London Giants were expecting to add a No. 6 to the team squad. Liverpool did prepare a 52 million euro contract for the Spanish midfielder. Zubimendi preferred to stay with Real Sociedad at least till the end of the season.

He has made a total of 200 appearances for the San Sebastian side. He opened up on why he rejected Liverpool in the last summer transfer window with Diario Vasco he said-

“There were many reasons for my decision. I was selfish and thought what was best for me.”

Martin was also one of the standout players in Euro 2024. He played a clinical part in helping Spain lift the silverware earlier this season. The midfielder has been a key target for other clubs after his brilliant performance in the tournament.

Liverpool again has a chance to prepare a new deal for Zubimendi. Arne Slot’s side will face tough competitors as Manchester City are also in the chase for the midfielder. The current tile holders will clash swords with the table leaders to bolster their defensive midfield setup.

It will be interesting to see if Martin will choose to move with any other Premier League giants. The January transfer window will be interesting to see the final decision of the 25-year-old Spaniard.

The Reds set to face tough opponents

Liverpool will clash against Tottenham Hotspur in their next Premier League fixture. This is set to be an exciting match as both the clubs are in their winning ways.

The last time these two teams faced off each other it was a thrilling game. This match ended in a 6-game thriller. Liverpool came out on top in this game as the final result ended in the favour of the Reds with a 4-2 scoreline.

Spurs are shaky yet unpredictable this season. Liverpool should not undermine this challenge as the game is set at an away stadium. Arne Slot’s men are in fine form and are the favourites to win this match seeing their current form.

These two giants will face each other in another cup game. Liverpool will again face Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final round of the EFL Cup. These two games will definitely be a delight to watch for any football fan.
