Kelvin Phillips’ debut season at Manchester City hasn’t gone well. Under Pep Guardiola he hasn’t got many chances as the manager prefers Rodri as the first choice in midfield. Phillips long-term future might be in doubt and people have already started talking about it.
According to Javier Parra Peña of Fichajes, Guardiola is already looking for a replacement for a 27-year-old who struggles to perform. The name that comes to replace England International is Enzo Fernandez of Benfica. After his impressive World Cup campaign, City are now following his condition.
Fernandez joined Benfica last summer on a five-year deal, he has featured in 28 games having scored four goals and providing seven assists.
Manchester City following Fernandez
The Argentinian midfielder was named Best Young Player if FIFA World Cup 2022. He is also a key player for Benfica in the Champions League and has caught the eyes of many top English clubs including Manchester City and Chelsea.
The midfielder has most tackles (2.4) than any other City player. He is also known for his creativity and passing skills in the middle of the park. Chelsea are also interested in Fernandez and looks more likely to sign him than City.
Even though Phillips had a bad debut season, Guardiola isn’t likely to replace him just after one season. He is likely to give him more chances, but he might also consider an upgrade seeing how good Fernandez is. He could definitely improve some things in City’s midfield and he is still young and could thrive under a manager like Guardiola.
