Recently, Manchester City midfielder, Rodri has expressed his opinion on the modified fixture format. He believes that it is not appropriate for the players. Nowadays, a top-level professional player has to play 60-70 matches in a single season.
Although more matches can bring more entertainment to the football fans, we never look into the opposite side of the coin. If a player plays that many matches without taking any rest, it can cause severe problems in his body that include muscle fatigue, hamstring injury, and other problems. If a player plays with fatigued muscles, there are high risks that he will get injured.
For example, Chelsea star, Cole Palmer, was taken out of the England team because he was suffering from muscle fatigue. Multiple sources were claiming that he was playing almost every single match for the Blues without taking rest. This might be the reason for his problem.
Manchester City midfielder Rodri has taken the initiative to send this message to the higher authority of world football. According to the Deccan Herald, he added that if this problem lingers on, all the will call for a strike against the higher authority.
The Spanish midfielder said that a top-level player can produce the best performances if he plays an optimum number of games. According to him, 50 games in a season should be enough for the players. If they play more than that, the performance quality might decrease abruptly.
Solution for big clubs like Manchester City
At this moment, the only solution to this problem is to reduce the number of matches in a single season. It will be best if the higher authorities look into this matter. They should always think about the players who are trying to maintain their consistency in each and every game.
This tight fixture is a massive problem for big teams like Manchester City and Arsenal. During Christmas, every Premier League club plays a greater number of games in a single week. In other words, every team faces a tight schedule in Christmas week.
Multiple things have changed in modern-day football. Nowadays there are more games and more advanced technologies to take match decisions. A few years ago, these things were not there in football, but people used to watch those limited number of games with a lot of passion and attention.
New format of the game
In modern-day football, multiple tournaments take place in a single season. For example, a top-level European footballer plays in the in the UEFA Champions League, League matches, and international friendlies. On top of that, international tournaments like the World Cup and Euro can be added to this list, but they take place after some years.
Besides the UEFA Champions League, there are other tournaments in Europe, such as the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Conference Cup. In England, those football clubs that finish outside the top four spots get to play these tournaments. So, a large number of players go through this ‘hectic schedule’. They play matches without taking rest.
Not all of the matches have the same importance. Each one requires different preparatory methods and tactical approaches. All of these things need time. There is a big gap between understanding tactics and implementing them on the pitch. So, these things have to be perfected for a long time. Then only a team can succeed in every match.
It is always better to go for a smaller number of matches because you can focus on each and every match. This will produce entertaining as well as high-quality performances from the players. Players are also humans like us. If they play multiple football matches within a short amount of time, it will become monotonous for them. Ultimately, that will affect their performance. That is why they need some break so that they can spend some family time.
