According to Fichajes, Manchester United have identified Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as the replacement for Paul Pogba whose contract is expiring in June 2022. The Red Devils were also linked with the Serbian international before when Mourinho was in charge. However, the negotiations did not work then but United can do what they can to replace the French international. There is a high possibility that Paul Pogba may leave the club at the end of this season.
Manchester United signed Pogba for a world record fee then but may let him go for a free transfer next summer. Pogba’s time at United is kind of mixed as he had several good moments but several bad moments too. Nonetheless, Real Madrid and Juventus are battling for the midfielder as per a few reports. Many have criticized Pogba for his lack of discipline and sometimes have been a bit harsh. However, it is undeniable that he is a World Cup winner with world-class talent and ability. In the later stages under Mourinho, Pogba also seemed to struggle tactically and was out of position on several occasions.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has very similar abilities with Paul Pogba. He has a very good physique with good passing ability but most importantly he has the tactical discipline where Pogba has struggled previously. While very few players do the job of a box-to-box midfielder better than Savic.
Why do Manchester United want Savic to replace Paul Pogba?
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has very similar qualities to the Frenchman. He has a good physique and height to wrestle for the ball. Savic has good control of the ball and is also a very good distributor of the ball. He scans the opponent’s area well to put the ball in good areas. His defensive contribution is what makes him tactically disciplined. He is also very good at pressing in the middle block. Not to mention his ability to run with the ball and a great powerful shot.
Pogba is one of the best midfielders in the world, however, he struggles to be consistent with his abilities. He has even made quite a few mistakes that have cost the club. With Pogba around, the club is constantly stuck in either one controversy or another. Moreover, Pogba is also one of the highest-paid players at the club with very little to show for it. All of these problems will be solved if Pogba leaves and Savic joins Manchester United.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has a contract with Lazio till the summer of 2023 and the Italian side will not let Savic leave the club easily. They will try to renew his contract to bind him to the club. If Manchester United wants Savic to play for them then they should be quick and smooth with the operation. The Red Devils must have learned something from their previous failed deal with Savic. United’s midfield is the target of many critics and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic might solve half of their issues. They have to be aware of the competition they face for Savic as other big clubs are interested in the Serbian international.
