Manchester United may appoint a new manager next season

Gareth Southgate

The pressure continues to mount on Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, with reports suggesting a current player believes his tenure at Old Trafford is nearing its end. Despite guiding United to an FA Cup final, significant scrutiny surrounds him as the summer approaches.

In the lead-up to today’s match against Arsenal, Dutch manager Erik ten Hag has adopted a confident stance in his press conferences. However, former Liverpool midfielder turned pundit, Jason McAteer, also weighed in, making a significant assertion. McAteer claimed to have conversed with a current player who hinted at Ten Hag being replaced by an incumbent international manager.

Before Manchester United’s match against Arsenal, McAteer disclosed on BEIN Sports that he had conversed with a player at the club regarding the identity of the next manager.

When pressed by presenter Richard Keys, McAteer dismissed names like Thomas Tuchel and Jose Mourinho. That is before conceding that Gareth Southgate was the rumored candidate.

Manchester United and Southgate seems to be a good pair

Indeed, the connections between Southgate and United have been previously reported. Particularly given his rapport with Dan Ashworth and his favorable regard from Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS. However, McAteer’s revelation adds another layer to the narrative. If a current player is indeed discussing managerial changes, it underscores the issues within the current United squad.

Southgate does seem like a logical choice, capable of managing the media and global stature of a top club. However, the concern lies in the leak of such information. For a player to confide in a pundit, especially a former Liverpool player, is concerning. United fans rightfully expect better, and it remains to see if this rumor gains traction.
