Manchester United Prioritize Midfield Reinforcements

Manchester United are looking to bolster their midfield on a high-priority basis. This comes in the wake of Darwin Nunez being close to a deal with Liverpool. The Uruguayan striker was on United’s list too, but it seems that their arch-rivals have won the race for him.

Now, Manchester United will turn its attention toward the midfield department. It has often been labelled as their weak link in recent years.

The Red Devils signed Nemanja Matic in 2017 when he was one of the best destroyers in the Premier League. However, age caught up with him it showed in games. The Serbian has now departed Old Trafford.

The Midfield Situation At Manchester United

Paul Pogba was the world-record fee for a transfer when he re-signed for United following a fruitful spell in Turin. However, he too could not live up to the expectations that the massive price tag brought. A mixture of his own inconsistency, injuries, dysfunctional teammates and lack of managers trust in him led to a hugely disappointing spell at Old Trafford. The Frenchman too is on his way out now.

Scott McTominay, Donny Van de Beek and Fred remain the only midfielders at the club now. Mctominay and Fred have often been criticized for their passiveness and deemed not good enough for the standards set at Old Trafford. Donny Van de Beek has had poor spells in England, and it is not sure how much his old boss will play him.

A marquee player is the need of the hour in this case. Frenkie de Jong is a name United are strongly linked to. He can add some much-needed calmness and control the tempo in games. Familiarity with Ten Hag’s system from his time at Ajax is another added benefit. United have had a bid rejected, but will be looking to pursue the Dutchman.
