Manchester United have had a difficult season. They are battling for a Champions League spot however top 4 is getting out of their reach with every Gameweek. Placed at 7th, Manchester United are a mile away from Champions League football.

The former midfielder, Carlton Palmer has given his thoughts on the subject. He believes United are two signings away from being title contenders. Palmer has advised Manchester United to sign Harry Kane and Declan Rice. The duo should cost at least 300m and he believes they could be the difference between United fighting for Europe and the title.

He said,

“Of course, they’ve got to be title contenders. I don’t think it’s going to happen. They definitely need to strengthen at the back. They definitely need a midfield player, and they definitely need a front player. So, we’ll have to see.”

What has caused Manchester United to collapse

Manchester United have been in a downward spiral ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left. United have had a string of managers, none able to reproduce Sir Alex’s magic. Jose Mourinho was the only manager who came close to succeeding at United by bringing in 3 trophies for his team. However, he too was unable to be a long-term solution.

This could be due to a lot of issues. First off, United have a board that interferes with the decisions of the manager. This has caused United to bring in a lot of unwanted players into the club. A successful football club has an owner who cares about the club and leaves everything to the manager, i.e. Chelsea. Secondly, Manchester United pay their players too much. Manchester United have a higher wage bill than Manchester City who have to spend a billion in transfers. This leads to the players thinking they are bigger than the club which is not something one does not want to see in a football club. These are just a couple of issues with the club and the issues go deeper than this. One does wonder, what Ten Hag could do with the club

However, United are bringing in Erik Ten Hag. Ten Hag has worked with Pep Guardiola at Bayern. The Dutchman has found a lot of success at Ajax where he has won the Eredivisie multiple times. His most impressive feat being, taking Ajax to the semi-finals of the Champions League where they lost to Tottenham on away goals. Ten Hag is a firm believer of Tiki-Taka and could possibly be the key to unlocking United’s true self.
