In a recent interview, Chelsea wing-back Marcos Alonso suggested that he would be ready to sign a new contract with the European champions to extend his stay at the Stamford Bridge.
Marcos Alonso is currently under contract with Chelsea until 2023. A number of Chelsea’s players’ contracts are expiring in the next few seasons. In the short term the contracts of Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, and Andreas Christensen are set to expire at the end of the season. As things stand the club look set to lose all three defenders on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The Spanish wing-back has been a good servant of the club. Since his move to Stamford Bridge, he has made a total of 196 appearances for the club in all competitions. In this time he has recorded 26 goals and 20 assists. (stats via Transfermarkt)
In a recent interview talking about a new contract at the club, Marcos Alonso said:
“Why not?”
“For me I still have another year-and-a-half on my contract. I’m not thinking further than Saturday at the moment. It’s a question where maybe I don’t know the answer and it doesn’t just depend on what I want. But as I said before, I will always try to give 100 per cent and always focus on the next game. I am very happy here so why not?”
Chelsea set for a very long summer transfer window?
Chelsea look to be well and truly in a defensive crisis at the moment. The majority of the club’s senior defenders look set to leave the club on a free transfer next summer. Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, and Cesar Azpilicueta are all out of contract next summer.
Club captain Cesar Azpilicueta looks set to join Spanish giants Barcelona in the summer. While Andreas Christensen has also shown no intention of signing a new deal and is also a summer target for Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
While Antonio Rudiger is demanding a £400k a week contract from Chelsea. The European champions seem reluctant to meet his wage demands and the German defender looks set to join Real Madrid in the summer.
The European champions have been linked with Sevilla centre-half Jules Kounde and Leicester City centre-half Wesley Fofana. Chelsea will need to act fast in the summer transfer window to replace the three defenders if they move on a free transfer.
