Mark Boucher replaces Mahela Jayawardene as Mumbai Indian’s head coach

Mumbai Indians announced former South African wicket-keeper, Mark Boucher as their head coach from IPL 2023. Boucher will succeed Mahela Jayawardene as the head coach. Jayawardene has held the position for five long years. Mumbai won the title three times during his tenure. He is promoted to Global Head of Performance. Besides him, Zaheer Khan was also promoted as Global Head of Cricket Development. Previously, Khan was the Director of Cricket Operations.

Mumbai Indians have revamped their coaching staff for the upcoming IPL edition. They have expanded their franchise all over the world. Hence, they are overhauling their entire staff to manage all the franchises together. They have promoted their existing staff and are hiring additional new members. Currently, Mark Boucher is the head coach of South Africa’s national team and he is going to step down after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. There were rumors that he was in talks with multiple T20 franchises for a potential role.

Akash Ambani believes Boucher will carry forward the club’s legacy

Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio, put out a statement to welcome Mark Boucher to the Mumbai Indian family. He said that he will carry on the legacy of the club and that his expertise will lead to team victories. He said,

“It’s a pleasure to welcome Mark Boucher to Mumbai Indians. With his proven expertise on the field and off it as a coach guiding his team to numerous victories, Mark will add immense value to MI and take forward its legacy”

Mark Boucher is thrilled to be part of the franchise

Mark Boucher feels honored to be part of the world’s most successful sporting franchise. He said that he is looking forward to the challenges and will add value to the unit.

Their history and achievements as a franchise clearly put them up there as one of the most successful sporting franchises in all of the world sports. I look forward to the challenge and respect the need for results. It’s a strong unit with great leadership and players. I look forward to adding value to this dynamic unit.”

Mark Boucher was the most successful wicketkeeper for South Africa. He holds the record for most dismissals in tests as a wicketkeeper. He was a regular member of the national team for more than a decade. However, his career ended abruptly. He suffered a serious injury after a bail hit him on the eye in an unfortunate incident while playing against Somerset. The tragedy left him with a troubled vision and that forced him to leave the game. Post-retirement he started his coaching career with a domestic club in South Africa.
