Deemed as one of the most exciting youngsters after Ajax’s impressive run in the Champions League in the 2018-19 season. Juventus won the race to sign the Golden boy in the summer of 2019. But the switch has not quite worked out for both parties.

Juventus have been struggling in the past two seasons. Last term they missed out on the Serie A title for the first time since the 2010-11 season. This term again the Old Lady are struggling in the league. They currently sit 7th in the Serie A league table. However, they did top their Champions League group.

Matthijs de Ligt has made 94 appearances in all competitions for Juventus. In this time he has recorded six goals and set up a further two goals for his teammates (stats via Transfermarkt). The young defender once thought of as the perfect Giorgio Chiellini replacement in the heart of the Juventus backline has some other plans for next season.

His agent Mino Raiola told the NOS:

“I think we all know which clubs to mention for Matthijs de Ligt as ‘next step’. We will see this summer,”

“Premier League? It can be Barcelona too, or Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain.”

Chelsea amongst other Premier League clubs interested in Matthijs de Ligt

Premier League giants like Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur are all scouting De Ligt and could make a move for him next summer. While Mino Raiola mentioned himself that other European giants like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in the Dutch defender.

European champions Chelsea are rumoured to be the most interested party and are keen to bring in the defender next summer. Key members of the blues backline including Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta are all out of contract next summer. Chelsea could lose all three defenders for free next summer.

Antonio Rudiger in particular has shown no interest in signing a new deal. He is rumoured to be close to joining Real Madrid next summer. Followin which De Ligt could be the ideal replacement for the German defender. Chelsea are also scouting French centre-half duo Jules Kounde and Wesley Fofana as defensive options.
