Mattia Binotto made ‘unforgivable’ mistakes – Former F1 driver

Former Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto was sacked after a disappointing 2022 F1 season and will be replaced by Fred Vasseur.

The 2022 season started with Ferrari looking as the team to beat – winning two out of three opening races. However, from there, things went downhill for the squad. The downfall was a contribution of a lot of factors that include reliability issues, strategic blunders, and unforced errors.

Nevertheless, the mistakes made by the team in terms of strategies gained center stage. The axe ultimately fell on Mattia Binotto who stepped down from his position as team principal.

Regardless, ex-Formula 1 driver Rene Arnoux thinks the mistakes committed by Mattia Binotto are “unforgivable”:

“The mistakes he [Binotto] made for me in Formula 1 are unforgivable,”

Arnoux told La Gazetta Dello Sport.

“I’ve never been on Binotto’s side. Someone who says It will be better next year, it will be better next year, doesn’t deserve that place.”

“I’ve said it several times, behaviour like his is intolerable when you’re at the helm of the best team in the world,”

Arnoux added.

“You may or may not like Jean Todt, but he would never have said ‘It will be better next year”.

“He won, and when he won he thought about next year. But there are few Todts and Ron Dennis’ around.”

Fred Vasseur will replace Mattia Binotto and the Frenchman already has a history with Charles Leclerc in F1. Both have worked together during the junior days of Leclerc and his rookie season. Vasseur was the team principal during Leclerc’s time with then Sauber team.

It will be interesting to see how this partnership fares in Ferrari.
