Stewards have awarded Max Verstappen penalty points after his collision with Lewis Hamilton in the Brazilian GP.

Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton had a moment in turns 1 and 2 in the Brazilian GP on Sunday. The duo collided after the safety car restart on lap 7 trying to take P2.

This collision resulted in both losing several places. Verstappen even had to pit for a new front wing following the damage.

Max Verstappen was later awarded a five-second time penalty for causing the collision. The stewards deemed the Dutchman guilty of the collision.

Now, the stewards have also awarded two penalty points to the red bull driver. This brings his total of penalty points to seven. A driver will be given a race ban in case his penalty points reach a total of 12.

The total of 7 is not a thing of worry for Max, however, since some of his points will expire soon. These points expire after 12 months.

Stewards published a document explaining the reason behind their verdict for awarding Verstappen the penalty:

“The stewards determined that Verstappen attempted to pass Hamilton on the outside of Turn 1 by braking very late,”

the verdict reads.

“He did not complete the pass in Turn 1 and his excess speed compromised his entry into Turn 2, at which point he made contact with Hamilton.

“While the stewards recognise that Hamilton could possibly have given a little more room at the apex of Turn 2, the stewards determined that Verstappen was predominantly at fault.”

A lot of people argued that Max didn’t deserve the penalty. Many found Hamilton at fault for the incident.
