Barcelona have agreed to let Memphis Depay go if he can find a club this summer. Now, According to Sport, Newcastle United are ready to shell out €20 million to acquire the services of the player. Barcelona signed the former Manchester United forward to provide some depth for Barcelona’s attack. However, he has had a dismal outing in the Barcelona jersey last season. Now, with the arrival of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski, the club are very keen to offload the player this season to free up their wage bill.
The Dutchman moved to Camp Nou last season on a free transfer from Lyon. The initial stage of his transfer was promising. He scored 12 times in 28 games for Barcelona last season. However, the arrival of Aubameyang and Ferran Torres cut his game time. Now, with the arrival of Raphinha and Ferran Torres and re-signing of Ousmane Dembele, Depay has further slipped down the pecking order.
Barcelona ready to let Depay depart this summer
Barcelona have agreed to let Memphis Depay leave this summer and are encouraging him to actively contact other clubs this summer for a move away from Camp Nou. However, Barcelona have set a price valuation of £17m on Depay. Reportedly, Depay feels that this valuation is too much for him. He has genuine fears that interested clubs are going to be deterred by this over-pricing. However, Newcastle have emerged as a potential target for the player. They are ready to spend the £20m necessary for his transfer to St James’s park.
As it turns out, Depay is not keen on a move to Newcastle. Depay also turned down a move to Tottenham when they made a bod for him previously. However, Depay must go to a club where he is given play time. More playing time will ensure more chances of selection in the Dutch national team that will play in the World Cup in Qatar.
