Turkey’s brilliant run in the Euro 2024 continues as Montella’s men beat Austria 2-1 on Wednesday in the round of 16. Turkey will now meet the Netherlands, who also secured their position in the next stage after beating Romania 3-0. Despite finishing top of the table ahead of France, Austria could not secure their position in the quarter-final after losing to Turkey.
Turkey starts the match with center-back Merih Demiral’s scoring the opening goal of the match in the 58th second. As soon as the game started, Turkey got their first corner of the game within the first minute of the game. And Turkey used that chance perfectly. After Austria’s Baumgartner and Pentz failed to clear the ball from the penalty box, Turkey defender Merih Merih Demiral took advantage of the situation and scored the goal for Turkey. it’s a dream start for Vincenzo Montella’s men. The rest of the first-half chances came to both ends. But both sides failed to use their chances as the first half ended 1-0.
In the second half, Austria started dominating the game and created more chances in the opponent’s box. But against the run-off play, Turkey scored their second goal thanks to Meriah Demirah’s brilliant header in the box. Real Madrid forward Arda Guler delivered a perfect in-swing ball in the box. And Demirah rose highest and scored his second goal in that match taking Turkey closer to the Euro 2024 quarter-final.
However, Austria made their way back into the game after Michael Gregoritsch scored in the 66th minute. Austria defender Posch nodded down a curling ball from the Corner. The Austrian substitute Gregoritch reacted brilliantly and scored the goal for Austria. In the rest of the second half, Austria managed to create lots of chances. Ralf Rangnick’s men took a total of 15 shots whereas Turkey took only 3. But despite their chances Austria failed to turn the game in their favor.
But in the 94th minute, Austria came closest to scoring the equalizer. Turkey goalkeeper Mert Gunok pulled off what could be the save of the tournament. Turkey’s number 1 denied Christopher Boumgartner’s towering header and kept Turkey’s hope alive in the tournament.
So, despite their brilliant start in the tournament, Austria failed to secure their place in the round of 8 and left the tournament.
Quarter Final Fixtures in Euro 2024
Turkey will meet the mighty Dutch side in Berlin on Saturday. After their stunning victory over Romania by 3-1, the Netherlands are pretty confident to make their position in the semi-final. But Turkey have another plan. This is Euro 2024, you never know what will happen. We have to wait till Saturday for the result.
