Micah Richards claims Jurgen Klopp sold the best player in the Premier League in the form of Philippe Coutinho. Barcelona bought Coutinho for a price of 135m from Liverpool back in the Summer of 2018.
Micah Richards and Gary Lineker had a brief discussion on Coutinho in BBC Match of the Day top 10 Podcast. At the time of his selling, Richards claims he was the best player in the world. Coutinho has also found a way into Richard’s top ten Number 10’s in premier league history. he said,
“I’m surprised it didn’t work out for him though, I thought it would have been perfect for him, when he left he was the best player in the league wasn’t he?”
Lineker says he was a breathtaking footballer. he further added,
“Coutinho, he’s a breathtakingly talented footballer, he didn’t quite do it at Barcelona though did he? We saw him at Liverpool, bending them into the top corner,”
Was selling the best player in the world the right decision?
Coutinho wanted to leave Liverpool by 2018. Klopp sold him to Barcelona for a fee of 135m plus add-ons. Coutinho left as he wanted to win the Champions League. Coutinho believes he wouldn’t win the Champions League if he stayed at Anfield.
Klopp brought in Dutchman Virgil Van Dijk and Brazilian Alisson Becker. Both of them were instrumental in their Champions League win in 2019.
Coutinho on the hand had a hard time at Barcelona. He was unable to recreate his magic at Liverpool in Barcelona. Liverpool knocked him and Barcelona in 2019 in what was one of the greatest comebacks in UCL history. Following his poor form, he was sent on loan to Bayern Munich the next season. Under interim manager Hansi Flick, Bayern Munich demolished every team in their path and won every trophy in every competition they took part in. The most notable feat Bayern Munich had the year was demolishing Barcelona in the quarter-final 8-2 in which Coutinho scored twice and assisted once.
Coutinho is now back in the Premier League at Aston Villa under Former teammate and Legendary midfielder Steven Gerrard. Coutinho has shown glimpses of his former self at Villa Park and has been shining brightly.
Liverpool and Coutinho benefitted from the transfer and in a way both were able to achieve what they desired.
