Mick Schumacher confirmed to Mercedes as a reserve driver

Mick Schumacher Germany

Mercedes has officially confirmed that Mick Schumacher will be joining the side following his exit from Haas in 2023.

Mick Schumacher had his best-ever season of Formula 1 in 2022. The German who joined the pinnacle of motorsports in 2021 endured a rough debut season with his team Haas. Regardless, his second season alongside new teammate Kevin Magnussen was much better scoring his first points in F1 and finishing in P16 on the drivers’ standings.

Nevertheless, even after an impressive campaign this year, it was not enough for the 23-year-old to secure his future at Haas. Schumacher was eventually sacked for fellow German driver Nico Hulkenberg. Since then, the future of the son of the seven-time world champion is up for speculation.

Many reports indicated Schumacher going to Mercedes earlier last month. Now, it’s official that Schumacher will be joining the Mercedes side as a reserve driver in 2023.

Wolff welcomes Schumacher to the side

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff announced the entry of Schumacher. Wolff praised Schumacher for his career so far and hoped his experience in F1 will help the side:

“Mick is a talented young driver and we’re delighted to have him join the team. He is a hard worker, has a calm and methodical approach and is still hungry to learn and improve as a driver. These are all important qualities, and we’re excited for him to help us develop the W14.”

“We also know that with two years of experience racing in Formula 1 under his belt, he will be ready to step into the car at short notice to replace either Lewis [Hamilton] or George [Russell], should that need arise.”

Mick Schumacher is also looking forward to starting his new journey in Formula 1:

“I am thrilled to be part of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team as their reserve driver for 2023 and I am committed to giving it my all to contribute to their performance in this very competitive and professional environment.”

“I take this as a new start. And I am just excited and grateful to Toto and everybody involved for putting their trust in me. F1 is such a fascinating world, and you never stop learning. So I look forward to absorbing more knowledge and putting in all my efforts for the benefit of the Mercedes team.”

It will be interesting to see how this new stage unfolds in the career of Mick Schumacher.
