Mikel Arteta and Arsenal are interested in signing Aaron Hickey from Bologna

Although no official bid has been placed yet by Arsenal for Aaron Hickey, interest remains.

Arsenal on the hunt for a new Left-back

Arsenal is on the lookout for a new left-back this summer. Kieran Tierney has been wonderful for the Gunners this season. Now, Arteta is looking for a cover for the left wing-back position. Edu (the Technical director of Arsenal) is hopeful that he can secure an £ 18 million deal for the 19-year-old.

Aaron Hickey is a very versatile player. Hickey is capable of playing at Right Back and even as a Right Wing back. Hickey can also cover for Takehiro Tomiyasu in the right-back position. Tomiyasu had a brilliant start in the 2021-22 campaign. However, it was cut short following an injury in the second half of the last season.

Competition from other clubs

currently, Aaron Hickey is on international duty. However, this hasn’t stopped any speculation regarding his move to Arsenal. Reportedly, Newcastle and Brentford have also joined the race to sign the teenager.

Recently, Italian outlet Gazetta Dello Sport has claimed that an agreement of £21.75million has been reached between the clubs. The deal is most likely to be announced at some point in the summer.

Arsenal well-stocked in the full-back area

Amidst all this, Kaya Kaynak, Arsenal Writer for football. London appeared on The Arsenal Way’s PressBox YouTube and provided an update regarding the Aaron Hickey situation. He insisted that no official bid has been placed for the Scotsman. According to him, Arsenal is well stocked in the full-back area. The Gunners are also keeping an eye on emerging talents such as Lino Sousa and Brooke Norton-Cuffy

Whilst Arsenal is keen on a deal for Aaron Hickey, much of it depends on the decisions of Nuno Tavarez. Tavarez has been linked with a loan move to Atalanta. However, it looks unlikely that Cedric Soares will be departing this year.

Kaya’s statement is as follows

“It’s tricky though because Arsenal have four full-backs and they also have two bright young full-back prospects in terms of Lino Sousa on the left and Brooke Norton-Cuffy on the right so they don’t want to damage that balance. Obviously, if Cedric (Soares) or Nuno Tavares were to leave then maybe you start to look at Hickey and you start bringing him in.”

“But Cedric, I’ve been told doesn’t want to leave and I don’t think he’s been given any indication that Arsenal want to sell him. Nuno Tavares, as we’ve seen the reports linking him with a move to Italy, but I don’t know if that will happen. If that happens then maybe they’ll push ahead with the Aaron Hickey interest, but for now I think it’s just the case of just holding off and seeing what happens on that one”.
