Arsenal has found a replacement for Granit Xhaka. Mikel Merino is the ultimate backup plan.
PLANS FOR MIKEL MERINO
The 28-year-old midfielder joins the Gunners on a four-year contract. So, €33.5 million valuation and €5 million in add-ons has been the deal.
Merino’s arrival addresses a crucial need for Arsenal. So, following the departure of Granit Xhaka to Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2023. Xhaka’s exit left a void in the left-sided midfield role. Despite deploying players like Kai Havertz and Declan Rice in advanced positions, the team lacked a consistent presence.
Merino is expected to slot into the left-sided number eight role. His ability to contribute both defensively and offensively aligns well with Arteta’s tactical vision. So, he is required for more composure.
Moreover, Merino’s elite football experience and leadership qualities will be invaluable as Arsenal competes on multiple fronts. Thus, including the Premier League and the Champions League.
Arsenal needs to improve their dynamic. So, the midfield is now incomplete.
So, Arteta needs the Spaniard. He needs a strength in the midfield. The Gunners are aiming to win a silverware this season.
