Jose Mourinho – the man, the myth, the manager who does not have a day job unless you include press conferences, for example. He’s poked fun at rival coaches, winded up journalists, and gone to the extent of hiding in a laundry basket to avoid a touchline ban over the years. That is not what it is this time, there’s racism.
As Fenerbahce and Galatasaray played out a heated 0-0 draw, Mourinho stated that Galatasaray reacted to one foul by their bench as ‘monkeys jumping around.’ The Turkish club took offense naturally and filed complaints asking for something done about him.
Didier Drogba to the Rescue – Defending Mourinho Like a True Teammate
If you’ve watched football in the last 20 years, you will know Didier Drogba and Mourinho will always have a father and a son relationship. Ivorian legend backed up the former coach, saying:
I know Jose has been around 25 years and he is not a racist.” There was history to prove it.”
Being clear about that, he further added:
“Why is my ‘Dad’ a racist?” Come on, guys.”
We all know Drogba isn’t a man to empty his chest but words did spill out of his mouth now. That opinion carries weight because the man dragged Chelsea to their first ever Champions League title, purely through will. Is that to say Mourinho is innocent?
Jose vs. Racism Allegations – A Pattern or a Misunderstanding?
Mourinho has had a lot of controversy with this isn’t his first rodeo. That is not the first time he has been accused of insensitive comments, although he has also worked closely with and managed numerous Black players that swear for him. Samuel Eto’o, Michael Essien, Romelu Lukaku are notable names who have never ever spoken about him.
However, Galatasaray alleges that his words were racist and is seeking legal action against him. Fenerbahce meanwhile has struck back, accusing the allegations as “misleading and baseless”.
Right now, it’s now a typical Mourinho story – divided crowd, club by his side, an antagonistic enemy demanding his exit.
