The McLaren F1 team is looking to hire more engineers for the upcoming season to improve their position on the grid.
The 2022 Formula 1 season was not an easy one for McLaren. The team showed some pace but was still nowhere near the front even after the new technical regulations. Much to the team’s dismay, McLaren finished in P5 even behind Alpine with whom they fought throughout the season for the fourth spot in the constructors’ championship. In 2021, McLaren finished P4 behind Ferrari.
Regardless, there were other key areas too. McLaren boss Andreas Seidl is impressed by the team’s management in one of these critical areas. Seidl highlighted some positives from the 2022 campaign that McLaren can carry forward.
McLaren budget cap management was up to mark
The new budget cap introduced last season is a vital aspect for the teams now. The cap limits the development of all the teams and it is important to manage both while a season proceeds. Recently, red bull was also found guilty of breaching the budget cap in 2021. McLaren F1 boss Andreas Seidl praised the team’s budget cap management as the season proceeded:
“We were in a position where we could continue to develop the car as far as Singapore,”
Seidl told in an interview with a magazine.
“Thanks to the good work of our finance department. We were able to create a good basis in relation to the regulation of finances and determine how we want to deal with the budget cap as a team in the future,”
the German added.
“Today, it’s everyday business to see how we want to spend our money.”
However, the wise money spending didn’t help McLaren snatch the fourth spot in the constructors’ title. So, more improvements are needed and Seidl highlighted the next important step from McLaren:
“Along with the finance people, we have found ways to improve the team’s performance,”
he said.
“We have freed up money that we reallocated to the engineers’ side.”
“We think it’s important, along with the infrastructure projects that are going on, to take the next step as a team,”
added Seidl.
“That’s why we started a big initiative a few weeks ago where we brought in a large number of new engineers.”
