Newcastle United have reportedly agreed on terms with left Back Matt Targett. Targett arrived at St James Park on loan from Aston Villa. Having impressed manager Eddie Howe, Newcastle United have shown interest in a permanent deal for Targett.
According to reports, Newcastle will be signing Targett at the end of his loan spell for a price of 15m. The signing would be the first for Newcastle in the 2022/23 Summer transfer window. Eddie Howe is going to breathe easily as there is no more concern in the left-back spot. Targett will fill in that spot and has enough competition from the likes of Matt Ritchie, Jamal Lewis, and Paul Dummett.
Howe’s a fan
Eddie Howe is a big fan of the defender and only had praise for him.
“We have gone into this transfer window with a plan to add strong competition in specific areas of the team and Matt will be a fantastic option for us on the left. He has important Premier League experience and know-how at this level, so I’m really pleased we’ve been able to add him to the squad”
The above statements just go on to show the type of player Targett is and the amount of trust the manager has in him. Targett has lived up to his hype and has an average rating of 6.87 across his 26 Premier League appearances.
Targett has showcased his defensive capabilities with an impressive average of 3.3 tackles and interceptions per match. Moreover, The left-back has created 1.3 chances per game when the Magpies are struggling for goals. These stats make sense why Howe wants the defender at St James Park at the end of the season.
Targett is 26 years at the moment, his prime form is yet to come and Newcastle could just squeeze the most out of him.
