Newcastle United clashed with Tottenham on Sunday. Newcastle started the game on a high as Fabian Schar‘s free-kick went past Hugo Lloris securing the lead. However, Ben Davies equalized for Tottenham minutes later ending their short-lived excitement. Tottenham also scored once more to have a one-goal lead over Newcastle.
The talking point of the match however was not the two goals or the free-kick, It was Bentancur’s tackle on Allen Maxim. Bentancur and Allen Maxim were going head to head with each other when the ball supposedly went out for a throw-in. Bentancur appeared to be leaning his head towards the face of Allen Maxim. But the referee Martin Atkinson or VAR didn’t seem any malicious intent in the challenge and decided on a yellow card. Mark Clattenburg has since come out and claimed Bentancur deserved a red and got away with it.
However, in the end, It did not matter as Newcastle collapsed like a pack of cards after the first goal. They went on to concede 4 more with 3 coming in the second half, losing 5:1. One could wonder how the game would have played out had Bentancur received a red card.
A similar challenge cost Arsenal to be a man down last year. Newcastle United would be furious over the game and they rightfully should be so. However, Newcastle cannot blame the referee entirely for the loss, as most of it was due to their error in gameplay.
