THE LIVERPOOL-NUNEZ TRANSFER SAGA FULL STORY

Manchester United were strongly linked with Uruguyan international over the last few weeks. But Liverpool have recently moved ahead in the queue to sign the highly-rated striker. Now, some recent reports are saying Liverpool have won the race for the centre-forward. According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the deal has now been agreed upon. Darwin Nunez pen a six-year contract with the Reds taking him until summer 2028. Liverpool have agreed to pay an €80m (£68.3m) fee plus €20m (£17m) in add-ons to sign the striker.

WHY ARE THE REDS SPENDING SO MUCH ON DARWIN NUNEZ?

Darwin Nunez is a very prolific striker. Nunez has scored 34 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions. Two of the forward’s six European goals came against Liverpool in the quarter-final of the Champions League. Nunez will now travel to England on Monday to undergo medical. Liverpool boosted their attack by signing Luiz Diaz from Porto. But the reports are that Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino could be on their way out of the club during the summer window. There is also the Mohamed Salah contract situation. The Egyptian international’s current deal with the Reds is due to expire next June. It looks like Liverpool are already planning for the future. Nunez is touted as a very special talent. He is called the next Cavani and next Suarez by the Uruguayan people.

The 22-year-old is set to lead Liverpool’s attacking line for many years to come. The forward was left out of Uruguay’s clash with Panama on Saturday evening. This is expected to fuel the suggestions that he was on the verge of securing a move to last season’s Champions League finalists.
