Nuno Tavares joins Marseille on a season-long loan

Arsenal have successfully sent left-back Nuno Tavares on loan to Marseille. The Portuguese arrived at the Emirates last season, but failed to impress.

Nuno Tavares is an attacking fullback, whom Arsenal recruited from Benfica. He is a good dribbler, but often left a lot of space behind. Many wingers could exploit this, making him a liability in the Arsenal defence.

Kieran Tierney is undoubtedly the first-choice player in that position. However, the Scottsman has had his injury issues of late. He has struggled to stay fit for a prolonged period of time. Arsenal cannot be dependent on him, so a capable deputy is required.

However, he could not make an impact. Tavares had some good games, but struggled massively in the others, A good example is during the Gunners 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup, where the former-Benfica man was hauled off after just 34 minutes.

Zinchenko: The Tavares Replacement

Arsenal have signed Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City. The Ukrainian is equally capable of playing in midfield. Although it is believed that he will be used in the middle of the park, he has shown his versatility as a fullback as well. He can easily slot in Tierney’s place if need be.

On the other hand, Tavares can work on his game in France. He will get more minutes, which is crucial for a defender. The Portuguese can work on his skillset to be more suitable for the level which is required in England.

The Portuguese will now play on loan in Ligue 1 for the duration of the campaign. Fellow teammate William Saliba played football the previous year.

Among the other outgoings, Bernd Leno has completed his move. He will sign a contract with newly-promoted Fulham. Lucas Torreira and Hector Bellerin are also looking for new teams.
