Real Madrid is considering making a move for Olivier Giroud during the summer transfer window. Giroud’s possible reduced minutes on the pitch at AC Milan is something the Los Blancos are seeking to seize upon in order to lure him away from the Scudetto champions.
In 38 appearances for AC Milan in the 2021/22 season, the 35-year-old had a commendable 14 goals and four assists. He chipped in with important goals to help AC Milan win the Serie A championship after 11 years.
Giroud’s position in Stefano Pioli’s team, though, may be hampered by the arrival of Divock Origi this summer. Real Madrid is paying attention to this circumstance.
Real Madrid are blessed with one of the best strikers in the world right now. Karim Benzema showed his class last year, scoring hattricks against Chelsea and PSG en route to a Champions League win. The Frenchman is very likely to win the Ballon D’Or as well.
Do Madrid Need Giroud?
However, he is on the wrong side of 30 now. Although he is ageing, he looks in perfect physical shape. However, it would be unwise to go into a gruelling season with Benzema as the lone striker in the squad.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Olivier Giroud has been discussed in Madrid circles to provide cover. Giroud has often been underrated by fans, but is a very good player on his day. He adds a very different dimension to the attack as compared to Benzema. This allows Carlo Ancelloti to have tactical flexibility. We may also see the two French marksmen in a partnership, should the move occur.
However, the sour relations between Giroud and Benzema may be a hindrance. Benzema infamously referred to Giroud as a “go-kart”. It remains to be seen if it has any consequences on a transfer.
On purely sporting grounds, this move can be an interesting one. With the departures of Luka Jovic, Gareth Bale, and possibly Marco Asensio, Real Madrid do need reinforcements up top.
