Paul Merson Disagrees With Chelsea’s Stance On Ronaldo

Paul Merson feels that Chelsea are making a mistake by letting the opportunity to sign Cristiano Ronaldo slip.

A move to Chelsea seemed to be on the cards for the 37-year-old earlier. However, it was reported earlier this week that Chelsea had decided against signing Ronaldo after speaking with his agents.

The Portuguese superstar had a stellar individual season last time out, but Manchester United as a whole regressed. They scored lesser goals than they did last season and accumulated their lowest points in the PL-era.

This prompted discussions among the football community of Ronaldo is suited to the modern game. Sure, he is probably the best goalscorer in football history. But these days teams cannot allow any passengers on the pitch. Every player must press and contribute in defence, something Ronaldo has lacked in recent years.

Paul Merson, however, thinks differently. He feels that Chelsea have a stacked squad, that only requires goals up top to take the next step.

Chelsea won’t finish higher than third next season unless they sign a world-class striker. And it is why they should change their mind on Cristiano Ronaldo. He is one player ideally suited to fill the role still on the market. You keep hearing that Ronaldo was offered to Chelsea weeks ago and that they have now decided against signing him. But that’s a mistake

It is true that Chelsea are in much better shape than Manchester United. They have the players and coach to accommodate Ronaldo’s work rate. With the departure of Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan, and the inconsistency of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, Chelsea will need a reliable goal threat. Perhaps Cristiano can fill that void, but that move is on hold for now.
