Paul Merson names Arsenal‘s Saka, Manchester City‘s Phil Foden, and Jack Grealish as the players who are most unlikely to pass to striker Harry Kane. Paul Merson explains that the main reason for this is because these players are ‘dribblers’. In the Premier League Harry Kane has 12 goals to his name, and he will be looking forward to trying and win the Golden Boot on the world’s biggest stage. He is one of the creative player in the England squad.
Harry Kane’s role in England squad
Tottenham‘s striker Harry Kane have a habit of dropping deep into the club team, but this does not really work out for him in the national team. Former Aston Villa player Lee Hendrie told Sky Sports,
“I want to see Harry Kane, not dropping deep into midfield and picking up the ball,”
He continued on:
“I want to see him playing in that six-yard area where he’s going to be dangerous. When he starts dropping out into positions where we have got three players that can really cause problems.”
Paul Merson responded to this,
“We have three dribbles there, so Kane will be coming short to get the ball because he’s not going to get past it.”
“Saka’s got the put a good delivery into the box. Grealish has got to try and produce balls into Kane, so we have to have him sitting through the middle where he doesn’t (drop deep).”
Paul Merson then further went on to explain his previous comments,
“I just can’t see them three giving him the ball. They are all dribbles. Maddison and Mount are the only ones who play on the half-turn and then bang, they play it. That’s what Kane needs. Maddison has done it with Vardy a lot. I have watched Mount a lot. He doesn’t mess about.”
England’s attacking options at the World Cup
Southgate is known for his immense defensive options on the national team. He plays a defensive- style of football. So it won’t be a surprise if Kane drops deep into the national team as well. Southgate have a few attacking options available to him. He can start Bukayo Saka who is at the top of his game at the moment. Phil Foden is also another young player who could shine in this World Cup.
