Pep Guardiola unveils new Manchester City exit strategy, acknowledging that the ‘contract is only a piece of paper’

Pep Guardiola

Six weeks after renewing his contract with Manchester City, Pep Guardiola admitted that an agreement “is just a piece of paper.”A few months ago, the Catalan coach signed an extension in November. After his club won the Premier League after a thrilling comeback on the season’s final day.

The third consecutive victory will be difficult to achieve. However, following the weekend’s games, Arsenal led the defending champions by a whopping seven points. On Saturday, Demarai Gray helped the visitors draw a draw against Everton despite Erling Haaland giving City the lead.

Later that day, Arsenal visited Brighton and won 4-2, increasing their lead at the top. They didn’t make the same error.

“The moment I feel something is wrong, I will resign or not renew my contract,”

Guardiola said, per Marca.

“I will not stay as [Sir Alex] Ferguson or [Arsene] Wenger.

“The contract is just a piece of paper. I extended my commitment to the club because I feel the team can still do well under my leadership.

“In the end, it’s all about the result. If we get tired of each other, I’m not going to stay until the end because of the contract.”

Pep Guardiola questioned his long-term viability at Manchester City

Guardiola pledged he wouldn’t have a breakdown as he left the Etihad Stadium in October before signing his new deal. The club has had the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager as its manager since 2016. And has won numerous domestic cups in addition to four Premier League championships.

“There will be zero problems (when I leave),”

he said.

“I am 100 percent convinced about that. They know the strategy. They know what they have to do right now, after the World Cup, next season, and then the following seasons. When a club depends on one person, they have problems because the club is not solid, it is unstable.

“The foundation of the club is why the team is solid. If the club just depends on Pep, then it could be doing better in this period. If the club depends on one player – like the striker who scores the goals – then that will not be a good team. The club is the most important word and every decision we make is because we are thinking about the club and the day after tomorrow, and for the next years and the future.”

The following month, when he reached an extension agreement, the 51-year-old mentioned the backing he had received from the team.

“I can’t say thank you enough to everyone at the club for trusting me,” he said. “I am happy and comfortable, and I have everything I need to do my job as best as possible.”
