Pep Guardiola’s Glowing Praise: Is Phil Foden Now Football’s Finest?

Manchester City have a huge list of talented superstars in their ranks. However, Pep Guardiola recently praised one star, Phil Foden for his display against Bournemouth last night. The treble-winners defeated the Cherries 1-0 on Saturday night to close the gap with Liverpool on top.

Julian Alvarez was benched for the first time in the Premier League this season and the Englishman was deployed in the number ten role instead of him. Though, he did not disappoint as his 24th-minute strike ended up being the difference between City and Bournemouth in Saturday’s clash. It was the 16th goal for the England international in all competitions so far this season. Alan Smith even elected him as the Player Of the Match.

Pep Guardiola has a reliable star in the form of Foden

Phil Foden is slowly becoming an integral part of the team as he always delivers when deployed. Speaking after the game, Guardiola praised him saying

Forget about the goals, of course, it’s really important. Do you know how he played? How he controlled and accelerated? He has become already a top-class football player. Before, he was a little boy, good actions.

Now, has become, already Phil [Foden], a world-class, top player. He’s so good, can play anywhere, especially in the central positions, is really, really, really good.”

The Spanish boss is correct in his speculations about Foden as he was a pure joy to watch. Keeping the goal aside, the way he dominated and dictated the game was marvellous. His stunning dribbling and close control meant he darted past Bournemouth’s defenders on several occasions while also helping his side transition up the pitch with a neat first-time pass.

Unfortunately for the match-winner on the day, his teammates did not seem to get the memo as Iraola’s side really grew into the game in the second half. But in the end, the travelling fans were having the last laugh as their stars extracted all three points from the game.
