Barcelona president Joan Laporta has confirmed that Barcelona were interested in Luis Diaz before he joined Liverpool.

Diaz joined Liverpool in the January transfer window after his impressive display for Porto. Jurgen Klopp was impressed by Diaz’s performances in Champions League and really wanted to sign him.

Barcelona held talks with Diaz’s agent

Diaz had caught the eyes of many big clubs while playing for Porto and Barcelona were one of them who held talks to sign him.

“We wanted to sign Luis Diaz, we were really interested in signing him and we even had talks with his agent,”

said Laporta (via Fabrizio Romano).

After signing for Liverpool, Diaz has settled well with the new league and club. He made positive effects to the Liverpool, he might have also had an effect at Barcelona too. Barcelona would be regretting that they couldn’t sign the Columbia international.

Laporta has also confirmed that Barcelona’s financial issue might have also made the deal impossible. Instead, they went for Raphinha in the summer transfer window, they probably had the best summer transfer window after signing the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Joules Kounde, and Andreas Christensen.

Despite all these signings, Barcelona are now demoted to Europa League after they finished third in their Champions League group. Laporta would not be happy as the board solved financial issues to sign the players Xavi wanted and yet they are in the Europa League for the second year in a row.
