Preview: Manchester United vs Wolves

Manchester United are on the road this weekend as they take on Wolves at Molineux on Matchday 3 of the 2021/22 season.

United pulled off one of the most dramatic transfer hijacks yesterday after they re-signed club legend Cristiano Ronaldo. CR7 looked set to join the blue half of Manchester, but United swooped in at the last minute. Within hours of news breaking that United were also in the race for Ronaldo, they had confirmed an agreement with Juventus to bring one of their greatest ever players back to Old Trafford.

The 36-year-old will not join the squad until after the upcoming international break. So, he will play no part against Wolves on Sunday.  The return of the prodigal son however, has put everyone associated with Manchester United Football Club on cloud 9. Fans and players alike have taken to social media to express their joy of having Ronaldo return to Manchester. This is a major boost for United ahead of their clash with Wolves. Much needed, following an underwhelming 1-1 draw last time out against Southampton.

The result against the Saints means that United have now equalled Arsenal’s Invincibles record of 27 Premier League away games unbeaten. If the Manchester club can avoid defeat on Sunday, they will set a new record for the longest unbeaten away run in English Football League history. Their last defeat on the road was at Anfield in January, 2020.

History beckons for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as he oversees his 100th Premier League match in charge of the Red Devils on Sunday. Of the eight previous managers to have hit triple figures of league games in charge of the club, only Ernest Mangnall with 54, has won more than Solskjaer’s tally of 52 from his previous 99.

Can Wolves stop United?

Wolves, who are without a point or a goal in the league so far this season, sit 16th on the Premier League table. Their 1-0 defeat against Spurs last weekend made it back-to-back defeats in the league, having lost to Leicester City on the opening day. Contrary to what these figures suggest, the chances are there for Bruno Lage’s side. The problem is putting them away. Wolves have not been clinical in front of goal, with Adama Traore guilty of spurning two one-on-one chances already this term.

Wolves did however, find the net four times in the second round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday against Nottingham Forest. If they can find similar form in front of goal on Sunday, it may not be quite as straightforward for a United side without a clean sheet in their last 10 outings across all competitions. The home team will be eager to put on a show in front of their fans, and what better way to do it than to slay a giant.
