One of the main point of criticism for the English team is Gareth Southgate’s tactics. Southgate tried many new tactics this tournament however many of them did not seem to work. He gave the fans their lifelong wish of playing Liverpool’s Trent Alexander Arnold in the midfield alongside Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham. However this move clearly did not work after England struggled to create chances in the group stage of the tournament. Southgate then tried many different players like Conor Gallagher and Kobbie Mainoo in the midfield position.

No matter which formation Gareth Southgate decided to play with. There are some players that are permanent on the starting eleven in the England team. Some of these players are Jordan Pickford and the England captain Harry Kane. However one more name in always on the team sheet in the England squad which is Declan Rice. After Declan Rice completed his move from West Ham United to Arsenal everyone expected him to reach new heights in career. He took his game to the next level under Mikel Arteta by helping Arsenal challenge for the title. Unfortunately Arsenal ended up the runner-up for the second time in a row.
Declan Rice played an integral part in the Arsenal’s title challenge. He is always a big presence in both Arsenal and England’s midfield. Rice has formed partnership with many players in his international career. However former Premier League manager Alan Pardew believes the Englishman was not used properly by Gareth Southgate. Rice plays in a very deep position for England which restricts his ability to involve with other midfielders in the team. Mikel Arteta played Rice in a number 8 role for Arsenal. Many people believed a similar role can help get the best out of Declan Rice.
