Reigning European champions Real Madrid are interested in pricing out Chelsea star Enzo Fernandez or offer a player as part of the deal.
Chelsea have one of the biggest and the most expensive squads in the world right now thanks to the free spending under the Blue Co ownership. Some of their spendings has yielded its fruit and some have not. One among the expensive buys was the Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez. He was on the back of an excellent World Cup campaign in 2022 and was on the list of various clubs in Europe. Anyway, Chelsea went all out and paid the asking price while tying him up to an eight-year contract. However lately it hasn’t been so good out there for the 23-year-old midfielder. There are reports that he is not satisfied with the minutes he is getting under Maresca and Real Madrid are trying to explore the situation.
TIME AT CHELSEA
Enzo Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica in the January of 2023 for a record transfer fee of £106.8 million. Fernandez was an instant hit primarily operating as a central midfielder. While all the other new signings failed to impress it was Enzo and Palmer who kept the team up. He was capable of doing both the dirty work at the rear end of the pitch and also the creative bit upfront.
Under the previous manager Mauricio Pochettino, he was one of the first names on the team sheet. His technical ability and athleticism have allowed him to support attacks and contribute to goals. He scored his first goal for the club in a domestic cup tie against AFC Wimbledon and followed it up with several more goals. A brilliant freekick goal against Aston Villa in the FA Cup is something all the Chelsea fans cherish. He was named the vice captain of the team despite only joining the club a year ago.
Despite all the early success, the Argentine is having a challenging time under new manager Enzo Maresca. The Italian manager has always preferred a more physical midfield in the double pivot formation. So he always goes with Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo to start games which leaves Enzo on the bench. He has only started a few matches and it was mostly in the cups and whenever Lavia was absent. Maresca once tried him in the number 10 role behind Nicolas Jackson but soon came to the realisation that Palmer was more apt for that role. Anyway if the rumours are true Enzo is unhappy with the game time and may look elsewhere in that case. And Maresca who has this smorgasbord of options at his disposal won’t mind if one of them is gone.
REAL MADRID INTERESTED IN ENZO FERNANDEZ?
Real Madrid are trying to explore this unfortunate situation for Enzo Fernandez to lure him towards Madrid. The midfielder has almost 7 years of his contract left at Chelsea. So the only way is to price him out. That price we all know would not be that low. According to Spanish media outlet Fichajes.net it is reported that Real Madrid are willing to either pay around £100 million or offer Aurelien Tchouameni in a swap deal. The Los Blancos now currently have the best squad in the world right now. And yet they are having some troubles this season.
The reason according to some pundits is Toni Kroos. The German was an instrumental part of the Real Madrid team on how they played, the tempo of the game. He was actually the puppeteer of the team who orchestrated everything with strings attached to his legs. Anyway that was only realized after the German left the team at the beginning of the season. Federico Valverde who took over the responsibilities hasn’t yet lived up to it. So Madrid might be looking for a variety of options in Enzo Fernandez who is both technical and dirty at times.
Maresca has also openly stated that he prefers the physicality of Caicedo and Lavia ahead of Enzo Fernandez. The situation is not that worse as it stands between the manager and the player as Enzo wants to be patient and wait for the chances. But we don’t know what awaits him in the future.
