Atalanta vs Real Madrid: Preview and Predicted Line-ups

Atalanta Real Madrid, Six Sports

Atalanta to host Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 at the Gewiss Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Last week the UEFA Champions League came back for the knockout stages with a bang. UCL matches have a reputation of producing the best and most entertaining football and the first set of Round of 16 matches did not disappoint.

Last week we saw Paris Saint-Germain hammer Barcelona at Camp Nou, FC Porto’s unexpected victory against Juventus. Borrusia Dortmund and Sevilla’s high scoring clash, and Liverpool easing past RB Leipzig. This week should be no less.

An injury-plagued Real Madrid gear up for a tough away trip to Atlanta who have been a free-scoring team this season. The Los merengues have gone out of the last 16 for the last 2 seasons but they did win it 3 times in a row before that. Real Madrid have a history of pulling results out of nothing in this competition but Atalanta have the firepower to come out on top of the Spanish giants.

Atalanta vs Real Madrid Preview:

Atalanta are the underdogs they were knocked out by PSG in the last minute of their quarter-final game last season and they will be fired up to go further in the competition this season. The loss of their talisman Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez in January hasn’t slowed them down.

The Los Blancos on the other hand got outplayed over 2 legs by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the Round of 16. Zidane’s men have to come out all guns blazing against a resilient and power-packed Atalanta side. Real Madrid managed to get a 1-0 victory away at Real Valladolid at the weekend as for Atalanta, they cruised past SSC Napoli in a thumping 4-2 home win.

Atalanta vs Real Madrid Team News:

Real Madrid have eight players injured. Zinedine Zidane will be without captain Sergio Ramos and Top Goalscorer Karim Benzema. Other players to missout are Dani Carvajal, Éder Militão, Marcelo, Alvaro Odriozola, Fede Valverde, Eden Hazard, and Rodrygo.

Atalanta would be almost at full strength with only Hans Hateboer missing through injury. Gian Piero Gasperini will play his strongest team in a 3-5-2 formation

Predicted Line-ups and Score:

Atalanta: Gollini, Toloi, Romero, Djimsiti, Maehle, De Roon, Freuler, Gosens, Pessina, Ilicic, Muriel.

Real Madrid: Courtois, Mendy, Nacho, Varane, Vazquez, Kroos, Casemiro, Modric, Vinicius Jr., Mariano, Asensio.

Atalanta 3-1 Real Madrid

Real Madrid with half their first-choice players missing have still managed to win their last 4 matches. Their experienced and proven midfielders Kroos, Casemiro, and Modric have pulled off great performances in those victories.

If this trio gets a hold on a game then Real Madrid will manage to get a crucial away victory despite playing without a natural Right back and having a weak attacking line-up. Having said that Atalanta are more likely to win this one as they go into this game in red hot form scoring 11 goals in their last 4 games.
