Red Bull all set to test a new lighter 2022 car – reports

Reports suggest that Red Bull are building new lightweight chassis for their 2022 car – have undertaken crash tests.

It’s known to everyone that Red Bull‘s biggest problem this year has been the weight. The RB18 is overweight by quite a kilo compared to its main rival Ferrari. The reports suggest that the red bull cars might be as much as 10 kilos overweight than the minimum weight limit set by FIA (798 kg).

As new regulations around the Flexi floor will come into effect from the Belgium Grand Prix, the weight limit is also an issue Red Bull wants to tackle.

But, making a lighter car has its own complications. It will require money as it’s a costly affair alongside FIA’s mandatory crash testing. Crash testing comes with its own expenses too.

Nevertheless, the overweight problem is something Red Bull have to tackle as quickly as possible. Reports suggest that their main rival Ferrari is already close to the minimum weight limit. They are probably getting a 2-3 tenths pace advantage each lap.

“That’s why Red Bull has now decided to take a radical step to reduce weight,”

Michael Schmidt wrote in Auto Motor und Sport.

Red Bull is reported buying a lighter frame whereas Mercedes have ruled themselves out citing budget problems.

“That would be far too expensive. Not just because of the crash tests. You have to build three new chassis, and they cost you two million extra,”

Mercedes reported as telling to a German publication.

Red Bull are already in a very strong position in the Championship. If they further solve their weight issue, they can probably easily run away with both the Championships in their bag.
