Red bull boss Christian Horner has dropped a hint claiming that we might see many teams stealing design ideas.
The 2022 season started with new technical regulations giving birth to new aerodynamic concepts and designs. The new concepts were based on new floor designs and sidepods.
With the new regulations in place, two teams turned out to be the most dominant. Ferrari and Red Bull got the best hold of the new designs and phenomena like porpoising.
So, it might be no surprise to see more cars similar to red bull and Ferrari designs. In the 2022 season itself, Aston Martin brought a huge upgrade which made its car compared to red bull’s. The design brought the surname “the green Redbull”.
Regardless, Red bull boss Christian Horner is also expecting “a few more cars” that might look similar to the RB18 design next season:
Horner told Channel 4:
“It’s tough because it is a handicap. But I think what you’ll see in ’23 is that the cars do converge, and I’m sure there’s a few more cars that will look a bit like a Red Bull or a Ferrari.”
Mercedes is still exploring different concepts
Although Mercedes started the season with a lot of complications thanks to their zero sidepods design, the team did manage to finish the season on a rather high catching up to Ferrari at least. Further, the team also managed to snatch one win in the end with George Russell winning the Brazilian GP.
However, the team still needs to work a lot on the development side to catch up with Red bull. Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin hinted the Brackley-based squad may be interested in Red bull’s design ideas:
He explained:
“I think the rules do change for next year, that’s going to change how people are looking at developing their car.”
“You’d always say that the fastest car is the one that’s got the best concept, so, you know, today that’s going to be Red Bull. Where that goes into next year it’s difficult to say. Certainly we, as a team, have not fixed what our car is going to look like. We’re still exploring different concepts.”
