Rio Ferdinand Drops Bombshell: Why This Player Shouldn’t Wear the Red Devil Jersey

Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has given a mixed reaction on the choice of former mate Jonny Evans in the squad. The defender was an emergency signing from Leicester City for an injury struck Red Devils team. However, the 36-year old has stepped up 23 times this season for Erik Ten Hag.

The Old Trafford side is still suffering with a lot of injuries to key members like Malacia, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and others. Evans did fairly well over the weekend to contain Erling Haaland despite United losing 3-1 in the end.

Ferdinand reveals his concern over the choice of Jonny Evans

Speaking on FIVE podcast, the Englishman was praising his former teammate as well as concerned about the situation of the club.

“I didn’t expect him to come in and play as many games and I didn’t expect him to do as well as he’s done. But he hasn’t put a foot wrong, it’s crazy. He’s good with the ball, he’s probably good with the younger players.

He’ll probably go into coaching after. He wouldn’t have expected to play as many games but listen, the way he’s going it wouldn’t surprise me if he got a new contract, if not there then definitely somewhere else. But really, as well as he’s done and as much as I admire him as a professional, really he shouldn’t be at Man United. It just shows you where they are.”

The point made by Ferdinand is somewhat correct from the perspective of a club affectionate. The Red Devils are surely suffering from a lot of injuries to their first choice players, but this is a problem with others as well. Looking at the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, they have better options for their backup centre-backs. Erik should have enough squad depth and quality to not be relying on a 36-year-old. A big summer is coming for United with Jim Ratcliffe now in the picture. Hence, it would be a surprise to see someone like Evans stay at the club.
