Robert Sanchez still the Chelsea No 1, but how many more mistakes?

Chelsea stick with Robert Sanchez as their No1 goalkeeping choice despite the high profile blunders, but voices are raising for a change.

Chelsea do have a goalkeeping conundrum to deal with. This has been an issue for the blues since losing Thibaut Courtois to Real Madrid in 2018. So many high and low profile replacements have come and gone but have failed to impress. Robert Sanchez might be the third goalkeeper they bought since 2018 and the first since the new ownership. But the Spaniard has also flattered to deceive. Djordje Petrovic was given the baton towards the end of last season while Sanchez was injured. The Serbian actually was better than the previous three and kept the place until the end of Pochettino’s tenure. While everyone expected Petrovic to stay, Maresca chose to send him away.

I am sure some of the fans might be bemused by this choice while Maresca trusts the stats and Sanchez. Anyway the fortune hasn’t changed a little for the Spaniard as he keeps on making mistakes. The call for a change is real and the Blues boss just has to look over his shoulder to see Filip Jorgensen sitting on the bench. The Denmark U21 keeper has not been too good to be fair in his cup appearances. But we have to also keep in mind the fact that the Dane has always lined up behind a makeshift defence. And the goals conceded haven’t been self inflicted.

So we think it would not be a bad choice to try out Jorgensen in a Premier League match. The move will at least give him a valid experience which the cup games fail to deliver. Some pundits including Jamie Carragher already criticising the Spaniard for his howlers have called for a change in action.

WHAT HAS GONE WRONG FOR ROBERT SANCHEZ AT CHELSEA?

Robert Sanchez, has faced a series of challenges recently that have led to a dip in his performance. After initially arriving from Brighton and Hove Albion in the previous year for 25 million euros. He settled well enough before getting injured and being replaced by Serbian goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. A move actually helped Petrovic to flourish under Mauricio Pochettino. The Serb actually did well in the absence of Sanchez and Chelsea went on to keep the Spaniard out for long.

When the new manager Enzo Maresca arrived it was surprising to see Petrovic go and establish Sanchez as the first choice. Anyway it hasn’t gone well for the Italian manager as his first choice keeper makes mistakes every other game. During the match against his former side Brighton, he made a couple of mistakes which led to goals for the opposition. Even though Chelsea won the match thanks to a quadruple from Cole Palmer the mistakes were highlighted by the critics. Sanchez has already given away a penalty twice this season more than any other goalkeeper in the league. He also has the most errors (4) leading to a goal, the Guardian.

Anyway they already have a second choice keeper at their hands, a 20 million euros man Filip Jorgensen. The Dane signed from Spanish side Villarreal is expected to be a future number one. However he is yet to start a Premier League match for his new club. Robert Sanchez fell under scrutiny after his latest blunder in the high profile encounter with Manchester United. The cross fired in by Casemiro, landed perfectly on the feet of Rasmus Hojlund whose touch was heavy. The Chelsea keeper Sanchez had already committed by the time and went on to foul Hojlund. The referee pointed to the spot.
