Rohit Sharma, India’s white-ball captain is currently rehabilitating from a left hamstring injury and is at the National Cricket Academy for the same.

Fresh reports are stating that the senior batter will make his comeback in next month’s limited-overs series between India and West Indies starting from February 6.

Sharma was named India’s Test vice-captain for the India vs South Africa series but was ruled out immediately after sustaining a hamstring injury before the team’s departure during a practice session.

Subsequently, he was also ruled out of the ODI series between the two nations starting on the 19th of January on account of not being able to achieve full fitness.

According to a BCCI source who told about the recent developments on grounds of anonymity,

Rohit’s rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy is going pretty well. He is expected to be okay for the West Indies series. It’s still close to three weeks from now before the first ODI is played in Ahmedabad from February 6.

A total of three ODIs and three T20Is will be played between the two nations. The ODI series will commence from 6th February while the T20I series will start from 15th February.

For some time now, Rohit Sharma has been battling with hamstring issues. He was dropped from the 2020-21 Australia tour for the same reason.

Sharma did make a comeback in the Sydney Test of the same tour and played two Test matches.

As Virat Kohli has resigned from the Test captaincy, it is now all the more imperative for Rohit to remain injury-free in the current Indian set-up as the team needs a solid leader who can lead from the front.

The BCCI has now made a mandatory policy, wherein every player has to get a ‘fit to play’ certificate in order to participate in any series or tournaments. They would have to clear a fitness test at NCA in order to join the national team.

What makes Rohit a class apart from others

Everyone knows how good a player and a captain Rohit Sharma is. He’s been leading the Mumbai Indians’ side for a long period of time and learned the ropes of captaincy quite well.

Many have agreed that Sharma’s captaincy is closer to the style of MS Dhoni.

But, as KL Rahul is being looked at as the next Test captain because of his age and backing from head coach Rahul Dravid, there is one advantage to Rohit Sharma and that is his success and brilliant form across all formats.

According to a senior BCCI official,

Rohit Sharma should be the bridge before BCCI is confident about the next young India captain that they want the team to lead for at least five years.

Adding further, he said,

This ICC World Test Championship cycle should be about giving it to an experienced hand rather than someone whose leadership credentials aren’t proven enough.
