Ronald Koeman has been handed a three-match deadline to keep his job by the Barcelona board after the recent Champions League defeat. Barcelona lost their opening Champions League fixture on Monday as Bayern Munich scored three goals. And it is the first time in 24 years that the Catalans have lost their Champions League opener.
Barcelona despite playing at home against Bayern Munich couldn’t put up a great performance as they looked feared by the German side. It seemed like the haunting 8-2 memories kept ring bells inside their head. And following that fear they were handed out another poor result against the German side. While Ronald Koeman has again failed the Bayern Munich test and his job is in danger now.
Barcelona board have reportedly given a three-match ultimatum to the dutchman to prove that he can still lead the team. And it is a huge task for Koeman as Barcelona has a busy week after their defeat against Bayern. As the Catalans need to get ready to play three La Liga games within six days.
Getting on to their first game Barcelona will face Granada at home on 21 September. The second game is on 24th September and the Catalan will fly to Cadiz for that. And the third game is on 26th September, playing at home against Levante. Currently, Barcelona sits 7th in the La Liga table playing three matches, in which they won two and drawn one collecting seven points.
So, the dutchman should get ready for a nail-biting week hoping his team delivers good performance to save his job. If Ronald Koeman slips in any of the next three games, then Barcelona will have no regret sacking him.
How was Ronald Koeman’s first season at Barcelona?
Before signing as a manager for Barcelona in August 2020, Ronald Koeman was managing the Dutch National team. There was a special request made from the Catalan side to the Dutchman to take up the job. While Koeman personally had interested in signing for Barcelona following his history.
The Dutchman took up the job when the club was going through a serious financial crisis. While Barcelona legend Lionel Messi was set to leave the club due to the absence of a proper future project. However, everything settled down and Messi decided to stay the Barcelona last season.
Till now Koeman has managed 58 games as Barcelona manager in which he has won 36, drawn 10, and lost 12. While the Dutchman has failed to win any major titles last season, only lifting Copa Del Ray. And Barcelona was thrown out of the Champions League race early, losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the round-of-16. Koeman’s Barcelona also failed to challenge for the La Liga title despite having great chances. Following which the Catalan settled for the third position in the league table. So, this is Ronald Koeman’s first season report at Barcelona.
