Three rookie drivers hit the track in Bahrain for testing as they gear up for their first season in F1.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, Williams’ Logan Sargeant, and AlphaTauri’s Nyck de Vries completed the first day of testing in Bahrain. All three will be driving their first season as full-time Formula 1 drivers this year.

Piastri wrapped up the day in the 18th position. De Vries and Sargeant finished in the 13th and 10th positions respectively.

Williams’ Logan Sargeant was happy after his first session of testing in Bahrain

Sargeant, who was the fastest among the three rookies, racking up a total of 75 said:

“It was nice to finally get the chance to get comfortable in the car. I feel like I did build up comfortability throughout the day, but it was relatively tricky, the grip seemed relatively low.”

“[There are] definitely a few things to work on going into tomorrow. Another full day, so that’s going to be another chance to take another step forward. I think we were moving in the right direction.”

Oscar Piastri is feeling confident

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri was also feeling optimistic following his morning session. The Australian registered 52 laps before giving the wheel to teammate Lando Norris:

“My first morning of testing went pretty smoothly which is a good start to the season,” said Piastri.

“We got through the programme we wanted to, which was great, with the focus being on getting myself back up to speed and used to the new generation of F1 cars.

“There is still a lot to learn and improvements to make but I think I’m getting there. It was good to get some laps on the board and everything felt pretty comfy.”

Nyck de Vries also feels confident

AlphatTauri’s Nyck de Vries registered 85 laps taking the car from his teammate Yuki Tsunoda for the afternoon session. The Dutchman showed impressive driving skills on his debut race in F1 last year.

“Today was our first day back on track with the AT04 at pre-season testing. In terms of execution and reliability, we had a positive day,” commented the Dutchman.

“Conditions were quite challenging with high track temperatures and strong winds, although this was the same for everybody.

“Ultimately, we went through the programme and even if it’s early, we continue to work on learning about our car and gathering as much data as possible.”
