There is a dilemma at Chelsea with the goalkeeping position, and Robert Sanchez has become the favorite for that spot.
Goalkeeper dilemma at Chelsea
In this transfer window, Chelsea have spent time in almost every position except the goalkeeping position. They have brought in attacking reinforcements such as Marc Guiu and Estevao Willian. For the midfield, Chelsea signed Kiernan Dewsburry Hall and Renato Veiga, and for defense, Tosin Adarabioyo joined the club on a free transfer.
Todd Boehly forgot to add a new goalkeeper to the squad.
Recent performance of Sanchez and Petrovic
Last season, Dorde Petrovic used to start most of the games for Chelsea. He capped a decent overall performance in the debut season for Chelsea. Petrovic saved Chelsea a couple of times with his heroic saves. The Blues Co. signed him for a 7 year contract.
On the other hand, Robert Sanchez spend most of the season in bench because he suffered from injury. Robert’s first season at Chelsea was mixed with a couple of good and bad moments. For example, Chelsea drew a game against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge because Sanchez gave a ball straight to the opponent.
Before that incident, Chelsea were winning the match. If Robert Sanchez want to be a word class goalkeeper, he must avoid these types of mistakes.
In English Premier league, there are some world class players who can punish the opponent for a tiny mistake. So, these types of mistakes are absolutely unacceptable.
On the other hand, there were some moments where Robert Sanchez became the savior for Chelsea. He made some heroic saves which helped Chelsea to win games.
When the entire team was lacking confidence, Sanchez stood alone and made one after another saves to protect Chelsea’s net.
Next season, the Blues will need this type of mentality because it helps the entire team to improve their performances.
Goalkeeping options for Enzo Maresca
Along with Robert Sanchez and Dorde Petrovic, there is another name which is Gabriel Slonina. In 2022-2023 season, the Blues bought him from Chicago fire FC. When Gabriel Slonina was playing for Chicago Fire, he caught the attention from Real Madrid and Chelsea.
So, both the clubs compete to sign the young goalkeeper and Chelsea were able to bring him at Stamford Bridge. After that he experienced two loan spells in Chicago Fire FC and KAS Eupen.
Now Gabriel Slonina will come back to Chelsea from his loan spell. So, Enzo Maresca will have an extra goalkeeping option. According to SB Nation, it is being said that the Italian loves those goalkeepers who are good with the ball distribution. And Robert Sanchez has certainly got that in his locker.
On the other hand, Enzo Maresca will see whether Petrovic and Slonina can impress him with their ball distribution abilities.
