There is nothing new about Chelsea visiting Brighton & Hove Albion, and it seems their talent scouting team has once again taken a shine to the Seagulls’ pool of talent. This time, it is Bart Verbruggen who attracts their attention as the Blues contemplate signing a new first-choice goalkeeper. Given that Robert Sanchez, a former Brighton man himself, has struggled for consistency, the interest Chelsea have in Verbruggen is worth more than just a glance at this stage.
But Stamford Bridge is ablaze with speculation over the summer transfer window. Will Chelsea actually go for Verbruggen, or will they keep with what they already have? Sanchez is not Chelseaโs number 1 in the way he once was.
Robert Sanchez: Under Scrutiny Again?
Robert Sanchez arrived at Chelsea from Brighton and there was a sense that fans had a solid and reliable presence between the posts. Instead, his time included some magical saves, alongside calamitous moments that even the most devoted Chelsea fan had to look away from. Admit it: at Chelsea, goalkeeping in recent times has been like watching a reality show with contestants falling by the wayside as they go out during their latest mistake.
The arrival of Filip Jorgensen last summer was supposed to heighten the heated competition, but now with Verbruggen the target of Chelsea scouts, it appears that neither are close to their man. No, this is not a romantic drama, and itโs another part of Chelseaโs quest to find their perfect shot-stopper.
Verbruggen: The Answer to Chelseaโs Goalkeeping Woes?
Brighton have an excellent Dutch goalkeeper who has been a stand-out performer and is quickly becoming one of Europe’s most sought-after young keepers. Already looking a mature 22 and having passed the test of Premier League intensity after just one start, Verbruggen has also impressed teammates and rivals.
Not only is he on the radar of Chelsea, however. The race for Muller would also include Bayern Munich, who showed interest, and Manchester United, who are looking for an upgrade on Andre Onana. Chelsea will have to weigh up whether they should take Verbruggen at all, with Brighton believed to be demanding at least ยฃ50m for the defender.
