Former Indian opener Virendra Sehwag will not participate in the initial matches of Legends League Cricket, citing “personal reasons” for the same. Mohammed Kaif will be the captain in absence of Sehwag.
The first edition of the tournament is underway from today and will finish on the 29th of January.
Indian Maharaja’s first assignment is Misbah-ul-Haq-led Asian Lions.
The third team of the tournament is Darren Sammy-led World Giants.
Each team will play the other two teams and the top two teams will battle it out in the finals.
Said Kaif,
Sehwag has some personal issues so could not come for the opening match. He may join later, I will lead the Indian side in the first two matches.
He added,
I have captained in a lot of matches including at the domestic level. I’ve also been a coach, mentor and do commentary now in my involvement with the game for many years. So it will be a lot of fun. Looking forward to it.
When asked whether they still possess the same firepower to play against Pakistan, Kaif said,
Nobody wants to lose, being a sportsperson everyone wants to give their best potential.
Shoaib Akhtar can still bowl at the same speed
Misbah-ul-Haq is captaining the Asian Lions which have the likes of Shoaib Akhtar, Shahid Afridi, Sanath Jayasuriya, Chaminda Vaas, and Muttiah Muralitharan.
In an interview, Misbah said,
It all will depend on our fitness on the field and how they respond to the situation. Shoaib can still bowl at 140 kph. He has arrived today and we will see how it goes.
Asked about their feeling on taking up arch-rivals India in the opening match, he added,
Whenever we play against India, everyone gives their best on the field. We will be very competitive on the field and would like to entertain people.
