Serhou Guirassy Makes Decision on £60m Summer Transfer to Chelsea
In a surprise update of Chelsea’s summer transfer plans, Serhou Guirassy has firmly ruled himself out of joining the Premier League side this summer. Despite keen interest from Chelsea and £60 million release clause in his contract, Guirassy wants to stay on at current side, Borussia Dortmund. It is a huge blow to Chelsea who were looking to add to their attacking options with the French striker. With Guirassy’s decision to stay, Chelsea will now need to turn their attention elsewhere to strengthen their attacking force.
The Chelsea power brokers liked the look of Guirassy as an alternative, especially after his brilliant start to life in the Bundesliga and their knowledge that he had already proven he could find the back of the net. His speed, power and versatility in the final third made him a target for the Blues. The 27 year old Guirassy has impressed in the German league and his form has seen Dortmund retain interest in positions at the top of the table.
However, despite Chelsea’s willingness to pay the release clause, Guirassy has opted for another year at Dortmund, preferring to continue his development in the Bundesliga for now.
Serhou Guirassy’s Form and Chelsea’s Interest
Guirassy’s form over the past season has not gone unnoticed. Since his arrival at Borussia Dortmund, the French forward has been able to convert some important goals as well, being quite useful and effective to build plays for his side too. His ability to finish, including aerially, coupled with a powerful physicality made him an ideal centre-forward for the style of play Chelsea have repeatedly leant on: strong, muscular forwards. Guirassy, dynamic and powerful, was viewed as more than simply a goal scorer.
But Chelsea’s advances for him have been rebuffed. Despite the appeal of the Premier League and the potential wages, Guirassy has insisted he isn’t going anywhere – for now. This will have certainly surprised many but it shows a great commitment to the German outfit, where he has formed strong relationships and has plenty of development left. And for Chelsea it is back to the drawing board on their summer strategy, as they now look to identify other targets who can provide the same level of quality and impact in the forward position.
Guirassy’s choice also brings to light the state of the transfer market right now. Indeed, players now value stability, development and squad continuity more than they do the riches on offer at some of the bigger clubs. Despite those financial boosts they basically signed what was there to be signed, and another lesson for Chelsea that players will not always show up even if they are the targets. Having sold their star forward it is now a conundrum for the club, who are now forced to look elsewhere in their search.
Author’s Opinion
And in my opinion, Chelsea’s links to Serhou Guirassy were very logical. It was obvious about the forward’s Bundesliga form, and his potential to succeed in the Premier League. And for any cub who can score and contribute to his team’s attacking game in addition, he was a major asset. The fact that Guirassy has opted to remain with Dortmund, much to the disappointment of the Chelsea supporters, says as much about the level of investment he has in his current side and how focused he is on pushing on that little bit further right now
It may mean Chelsea are scrambling for alternatives, but it will also teach them something about the volatility of the market. Clubs can spend the summer focusing on players and negotiating fees, but all the personal and professional ingredients must be in place for a deal to come together. Guirassy likely made the best decision by staying at Dortmund, where he can count on consistent playing time and a real opportunity to develop — something Chelsea might not have offered given their current state of rebuilding.
