Sri Lanka participated in Asia Cup 2022 as the underdog but they surprised everyone with their phenomenal performance. They defeated Asia Cup favorites – Pakistan in the finals to clinch their 6th trophy. They started their campaign with a loss against Afghanistan. But they turned around quickly and registered wins against both India and Pakistan in the super 4. Skipper Dasun Shanaka called the Asia Cup victory a “real turnaround” for Sri Lankan cricket ahead of the T20 World Cup. He even said it will be of great help for the crisis the nation is going through.

Asia Cup 2022 finals was played between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Pakistan won the toss and decided to bowl first. They restricted Sri Lanka to 170. But Pakistan could not cross the winning line and get defeated. The pressure was on Sri Lanka as they were defending in Dubai International Stadium is difficult. They were also told that Sri Lanka always had an advantage of batting second. But they proved everyone wrong and with their brilliant bowling restricted Pakistan to 147.
Sri Lanka cricket was going through a downfall. All senior players had taken retirement and the team was building up with new players. Recently Sri Lanka cricket association appointed a new coach for their team. Moreover, the country is also going through a financial crisis, political unrest, outrages, and so on. A sport brings brotherhood among us and at the same time destresses our fellow countrymen. Sri Lanka’s good performance helped a lot for their countrymen.
From per cricket point of view, it provided them a good momentum. In the upcoming months, the T20 world cup is going to be organized in Australia. So this win has instilled confidence in the Lankan players. They have performed well in 3 departments- batting, bowling, and fielding. They surprised everyone with their phenomenal performance.
Sri Lankan captain said,
” They were waiting for it for so long, especially the final. We should dedicate this win to the whole nation. We played the qualifiers last year as well. We have the same set-up for the last three, four years and last two years have been good for us. The players have been playing good cricket for two, three years but the winning factor was not there. This will be a real good turnaround in our cricket. This lot (of players) will continue for another five, six years, so that will be a very good sign for us.”
