Shreyas Iyer to miss cricket for an indefinite period after back injury reoccurs

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer, an Indian batsman, has been declared unfit for the forthcoming ODI series against Australia, which starts on Friday. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy‘s fourth and final Test match against Australia, Iyer did not bat. He expressed discomfort in his back due to swelling after spending two days fielding in Ahmedabad.

After leaving the match before its conclusion, the 28-year-old is seeking a diagnosis. ESPNcricinfo has reported that Iyer experienced a reoccurrence of a prior back injury, and BCCI staff will monitor him before deciding on his participation in the IPL.

What Indian skipper Rohit said

After being acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders and handed over the role during the 2022 auction, Iyer is now the captain of the team in the IPL. During a media interaction following the conclusion of the test series Rohit Sharma discussed Iyer’s challenges.

“Poor guy. It just was such an unfortunate incident,”

Sharma said.

“He had to wait all day [second day] to bat and then when the day got over, the issue he had with his back, recurred. He was sent to the hospital to take scans. I don’t know the exact report of the scans, but he does not seem to be doing that well.”

Iyer missed the first two tests too

After sustaining a back injury in December 2022 following the tour of Bangladesh, Iyer was unable to play until the second test against Australia. His absence will be a significant loss for the Indian team. They will be without his impressive average of 46.85.

The identity of his replacement is not yet known. But the 29-year-old uncapped player Rajat Patidar is considered a strong candidate to make the squad.

The ODI series, which begins this Friday will consist of three matches. Steve Smith will lead the Australian team in the ongoing absence of Pat Cummins, who is mourning his mother’s passing.
