Without question, Liverpool’s 100% record in Europe has taken a hit in Eindhoven, but Arne Slot saw enough silver linings to make any cloud jealous. At the front of them, James McConnell stood out as much as Virgil van Dijk at a school five-a-side match. Initially slated for a loan spell, the midfielder put in a performance so good that Slot is now having second thoughts about letting him go.
Slot, who was clearly thrilled with McConnell’s performance, said he ‘liked him a lot today.’ And then it is hanging by a thread — a loan move that once seemed certain is now in question.
Slot’s Dilemma: Loan or Keep McConnell?
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will meet sporting director Richard Hughes to sort out whether outlet youngsters Jayden Danns, Tyler Morton or Trey Nyoni could be loaned to different clubs. Thanks to his fearless display against PSV, however, McConnell has managed to throw a spanner in the works.
It was a concern that the midfielder hasn’t played much due to injury, but being so hungry and competitive in training is hard to ignore his potential, Slot admitted. Slot explained: ‘He is always very competitive.’ I’m not surprised but you question how anyone will react at this level.
James McConnell didn’t just react; he acted well. As such, Slot is reconsidering his entire plan.
Slot Sees a Fighter in McConnell
McConnell would be the underdog everyone roots for on the reality football show its got. However, injuries have kept him out of the action much of the past year, but his will and work ethic have returned him stronger. Slot’s words were not simply praise; it was a statement. “He deserves credit for his performance today.”
Because McConnell clearly fights for the badge, the Liverpool fan loves it. While he’s competing in training, he’s also arguing his way to still don the kit and still fight for a place among one of the world’s finest midfielders.
McConnell’s Impact: What’s Next for the Young Star?
As McConnell’s stock rises, what is there for him next? If he makes it, he has been reporting well at Liverpool’s push for silverware. He could, if he goes out on loan, get the game time he needs to become an even greater asset.
Truth be told, if you dominate on Champions League night against PSV, do you actually require a loan spell? Slot seems to think not.
Amara Nallo’s Tough Debut: A Learning Curve
McConnell had a dream night, and Amara Nallo made her nightmares dream debut. The 18-year-old was not given the chance to play for four minutes before being sent off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Ouch.
‘It is cruel, but this is the highest level,’ Slot said sympathetically but bluntly. At this level, that’s a problem; he misinterpreted the situation. ” But unfortunately a brutal lesson, and one Nallo will be thankful for when it comes to building his future.
Liverpool’s Next Steps in Europe
Although the 3-2 defeat saw Barcelona fail to overtake Atalanta in the group, it meant Liverpool still topped it. It means that the Reds can skip the play-off round and face Brest, Monaco, PSG or Benfica in the last 16.
Not bad for a team that left 12 senior players at home, right?
My Take on McConnell’s Future
Being a football fan, I am happy to see young players assume their role. After doubting that name before, his performance was exactly what Liverpool needed: a hungry, fearless midfielder able to step up. The tough thing is Slot has a decision to make, but if I were in his shoes (sadly, I’m not), I’d keep McConnell at Anfield. Why should he be sent out on loan when he’s proving he can be a first-team player? Sometimes you’ve only got heart—the kid’s got heart—and that’s what you need to be a success at Liverpool.
