The Spirit of Cricket debate rose again on Twitter after the 1st T20 between Australia and England. Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra questioned England cricketers’ double standards as they remained silent during the Wade-Wood incident.

The Incidence:

The Australian wicketkeeper-batsman top-edged a ball from Mark Wood and started to run for a single. The ball flew high in the air and while he was coming back to the crease, he stopped Mark Wood from taking the catch. He blocked Wood and ran across the pitch to prevent him from catching the ball. This created a debate over the ‘Spirit of Cricket‘.

The Twitter debate

Putting the video of Wade obstructing Wood while taking the catch, he captioned the image with a tweet:

“Are our English friends (the custodians of the Spirit of the Game) quiet on this?”

The English wicketkeeper-batsman Sam Billings reacted to this tweet by replying:

“Nope. Pretty obvious. But with all the abuse I got previously… so I didn’t want to tweet again…”

When asked about his decision not to appeal, England captain Jos Buttler stated,

“I was looking at the ball the whole time, so I wasn’t sure what occurred.”

“They asked if I wanted to appeal, but I felt it would be a hazardous one to go for so early in the tour because we are here for a long time in Australia,”

Buttler stated.
When asked if he would have appealed if it had been a World Cup match, Buttler replied,

“Maybe, sure.”

England and India were involved in a verbal debate on Twitter during the final ODI between England Women and India Women. The English pundits and the cricketers questioned Deepti Sharma’s tactics when she chose to Mankad Charlie Dean to complete a clean sweep over England.
